Making an Animal Pop-Up Card
There is something rather magical about taking a flat piece of paper and figuring out how to make it stand up.
For this little project, we are making animal pop-up cards! Starting with a printed template, adding colour and details, and then using a few simple cuts and folds to turn the drawing into something three-dimensional.
I particularly like pop-up cards because the materials are so simple. We don't need very much beyond paper, colouring materials, scissors and glue, but there is still quite a bit to discover about how paper moves, folds and holds its shape.
Starting with Colour
The digital printable also includes a set of animal colouring pages, giving younger children an easier way to begin with the characters before moving into the pop-up cards.
Colouring might seem like a simple activity, but it is also a useful opportunity for children to practise control and precision. Working within the outlines encourages them to slow down, notice where the edges of a shape are, and adjust the movement and pressure of their colouring tool as they work.
And of course, staying within the lines doesn't mean the colours themselves have to follow any rules! A tiger can be blue, a crocodile can be covered in rainbow spots, and children can experiment with patterns and colour combinations while still developing greater control over how they colour.
It makes the colouring pages both a simple activity on their own and a nice starting point before taking the animals into cutting, folding and three-dimensional making.
